S4, Ep 17 – RESET: The One Day Method

This time of year can feel full. Busy. And for many people, quietly overwhelming.

Instead of taking my usual break, I created a special Summer Reset mini series to support you through the festive season, not add to it. Each week, same time, same place, I will be sharing a short episode with one simple tool, tip or tactic to help you reset and stay grounded heading into 2026.

In Week 1, I introduce what I call the One Day Method. A mindset reframe designed to help you enjoy the celebrations without letting one day snowball into a week or a month that leaves you feeling flat, disconnected or frustrated with yourself.

This episode is a reminder that one day is just that. One day. It does not undo the foundations you have built. The challenge only comes when one day turns into many.

If you have been feeling exhausted, overcommitted or tempted to put everything in the “future me problem” bucket, this episode will help you take the pressure off and return to what supports you most.

In this episode I share:

  • Why the festive season can feel stressful when it comes to health and habits
  • The all or nothing mindset that shows up at this time of year
  • How the One Day Method works
  • Why one day does not undo progress
  • How energy, sleep and routines slip when one day becomes a week
  • How this reframe applies beyond Christmas Day
  • The importance of returning to semi regular programming
  • How this episode pairs with Season 4 Episode 14
  • Your simple job for the week ahead

Key Quotes

This time of year can feel big, it can feel busy and it can be just a lot. So instead of taking the break that I would typically take at this time of the year with Stay At The Top, I wanted to deliver a special summer mini series under the theme Reset. So each week I’ll be dropping in same time, same place with a mini episode focused on one specific tip, tool or tactic to help you

reset across this summer break. Now, week one, I’m gonna be focusing on a tool and this tool is called the One Day Method. This time of the year can bring a lot of stress for a lot of people. Work is full, we’re getting ready to wrap up, life is full, we’re pretty exhausted. Many people are wanting to still try to prioritize themselves or their health, but they feel overwhelmed, overcommitted.

and they’re running on empty.

And what can be a common byproduct of this is that it’s really tempting to fall into the mindset of, well, this is a future me problem. First of January is around the corner and I’m just going to new year, new me, fall into all of that and reset then.

Jess Spendlove (01:33.39)
But the purpose of this episode is to serve as a reminder that makes everything easier. And in reference to the one day method, I guess what I’m speaking specifically about here is thinking about Christmas day as one day. Now, regardless of whatever that looks like for you, whether that is lots of different houses and places that you’re catching up.

whether you’re spending it with family, friends, chosen families, however that looks, I know that Christmas Day can be overwhelming on a number of fronts. But the one day method helps you reframe that Christmas Day is in fact one day. So regardless of what happens that day, regardless of what you eat or even how much you drink or a combination of the two, it is one day.

Jess Spendlove (02:28.972)
And one day in the grand scheme of a week, a month or a year is nothing.

it won’t undo the foundations. But the challenge is when that one day becomes a week and then that becomes a month, which can really easily happen at this time of the year. That’s when we really start to feel it though. When the leftovers are there for the week or we’re eating out or we haven’t done a shop or we’re drinking more than normal. All of this feeds into our energy dropping.

our sleep going out the window or becoming really inconsistent and some of the basics that help us feel good, well they start to slip even though we actually have more time and capacity because most of us are not working or we’re working in a reduced capacity. Now I guess in reference to this episode I’m talking about Christmas Day but the one day method really applies to whatever day you celebrate. So I realize some people listening to this won’t celebrate Christmas

Maybe Boxing Day is their bigger day of the year or maybe it is New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. Whatever day for you that is, the one day method still applies. Or if it’s any other kind of cultural celebration entirely. But the one day method really does hold. This is about anchoring the celebration of the day to enjoy it fully and then you return to semi-regular programming the next day.

Once we get back into our habits, our routines, the things we do that help us feel good, we just get on with it and everything is less impacted. Whether we’re thinking about this from an energy intake perspective or our energy levels, or whether we’re thinking about this from a weight point of view if we do have some goals around that for ourselves. Regardless, and maybe it’s one of all of those.

Jess Spendlove (04:30.488)
things, but regardless of that, when we apply the one day method, all of those things have minimal impact, if at all.

Jess Spendlove (04:41.164)
And so if this is really speaking to you this episode and you’re thinking, yes, this is a really great mindset to help me reset across this festive season and you haven’t already listened to episode 14 from season four, I would highly encourage you to go back and to listen to that because I dig deeper on some practical tactics to help you across this season. I cover off a framework around how to make a decision making, how to use a decision making tool to help you.

stay on track with your health or prioritize your health in and amongst a busy season. This is a framework that I use with clients during busy seasons across the year as well as the festive time and it pairs really well with the concept of what I’m covering off here today in this first week of this mini series that I’m doing across the festive season. So that’s it team, that’s all I’ve got for you this week. Your job is simple, enjoy the day.

then reset. One day is one day and that’s where the one day method really comes into play. I hope you’ve enjoyed this short sharp episode. I’ll be back again next week with another short tip to help you reset across this festive season.
